Tragedy at Bicester Motion: A Dark Day for the Classic Car Community
16 May 2025 – Chronicle Report
It is with a heavy heart that we report on a devastating incident that has shaken the very heart of our classic motoring world. On the evening of Thursday 15th May, a severe fire broke out at Bicester Motion — the renowned heritage site in Oxfordshire dedicated to the restoration and celebration of classic cars and aircraft.
The blaze, which began around 6:30 PM, rapidly engulfed one of the main hangars. Eyewitnesses reported hearing multiple explosions, with thick black smoke seen from miles around. Despite the rapid response of ten fire crews, the fire claimed three lives: two brave firefighters who lost their lives in the line of duty, and one member of the public.
Two additional firefighters remain in hospital with serious injuries. Our thoughts are firmly with them and with the families of those who have been tragically lost.
A Community in Mourning
Bicester Motion, home to over 50 specialist businesses, has long been a cornerstone of Britain’s classic motoring landscape. In a statement, they expressed profound sorrow at the loss of life and praised the emergency services for their extraordinary bravery.
McLaren’s Formula E team — who are associated with the site — also issued a heartfelt message, offering condolences and thanking those who risked everything to protect lives and heritage.
Chief Fire Officer Rob MacDougall of Oxfordshire Fire and Rescue shared the following:
“It is with a very heavy heart that we today report the loss of two of our firefighters. We are doing everything possible to support their families, who have requested privacy at this time.”
Investigations Underway
The cause of the fire is currently under investigation. Thames Valley Police are working with fire investigators to determine what led to such a tragic outcome. At this stage, it is not being treated as a criminal incident.
Motorsport UK, which also has a presence on site, joined in the chorus of sorrow, underlining the strong sense of community that Bicester Motion fosters — one that now grieves as one.
A Time to Reflect and Honour
This tragedy serves as a stark reminder of the dangers faced by those who protect us and the fragility of the spaces we hold dear. For those of us who revere classic motoring not just as a passion, but as part of our cultural fabric, this loss is keenly felt.
We will continue to honour the legacy of those who gave their lives, and support efforts to help the affected families. If you wish to show support, consider donating to The Fire Fighters Charity.
Classic Car Chronicle will follow the investigation and recovery in the coming weeks. But today, we simply pay tribute — to the courage, the loss, and the strength of our community in the face of adversity.
